Does anyone have a plan in the works for phase two of your life (outside radio) or beyond it? Sometimes I feel as though I'm just checking in for the check, although I love what I do. At the same time at the end of the day I'm wondering OK what next? Any thoughts?
  • DeLoache · 1 year ago
You have to find your purpose in life. I know that sounds very Oprah-like, but it is true. The older you get, the more all of us should try to find ways to make this world a better place. If that means you stay in radio and transfer to another position and find another purpose....or leave the game completely.

You may have to leave where you are and get another position or do something different also. Is there something else that you do that's secondary now, that you would like to pursue?
  • Chris_Rose · 1 year ago
Yes... my advice... Think BIG and then get started. It's okay to start small, but not necessary.
What is absolutely neccesary is to THINK BIG! Make it happen.

I've been in radio for more than a minute and I know without a doubt that I'm going to have to break away and do my own thing. It's just a matter of time, so start building your plan so you can exit on your own terms.

Last piece of advice... think about what it is you love to do so much, that you would do it for free... but you're so damn good at it, that people pay you to do it! That's what you should be doing.
  • frontys Aabney · 1 year ago
We'll let me say this to you my friend, Finding ones passion in no easy task., but well worth it in the end. I suggest we explore our other talents, what brings you Joy, What is it you would do for FREE... 9-5 everyday ? if you had everything else you wanted( i.e, clothes, money, cars, all the other stuff we work for) Because at the end of the day...what's gonna make you look forward to morning?
  • NDaGame · 1 year ago
Frontys, Chris & DeL ... Thank you so much for your advice. I guess sometimes easier said than done. But I promise and I know you don't know I'm going to focus more on my real passion. Funny how fear holds you back for way to long. Not other people but that freaking fear that enters when and if we let it. Again, thank you so much!

Spider I use to listen to you "back in the day" in Tuscaloosa, Al. on WLAC. After then I lost track of you (didn't know it you were dead or alive). Glad you're still kicking! Do you have any airchecks from WLAC? If so could you post them on this site or somewhere on the web. I'm sure many "radioheads" would love to hear them. I know I would.
  • Spider Harrison · 1 year ago
Yes , I have a WLAC aircheck at another one of my sites. You can go to www.spidorecords.com
And opps there it is. After WLAC I came out to LA for Sugar Hill Records, worked radio on the weekends and became a member of the Screen Actors Guild. You're right - normally it would be weird to go under construction instead of just unveiling the new site.

Two top execs leave Radio One

    By Robert "Rob" Redding Jr.

    Publisher
ATLANTA, May 12, 2008, 9:40 a.m. - Two top executives are leaving black media giant Radio One, as the company continues to struggle.

Alejandro A. Clabiorne, vice president of marketing for the company, has given his notice and Lee Michaels, national program director for Syndication One News/Talk, has already left, three sources tell Redding News Review.

Neither Clabiorne nor Michaels could be reached for comment.

Their departures come as the company last week also lost another one of its key employees, talk radio star Joe Madison. Madison, who is ranked one of the top 20 talk radio show hosts in the nation and a recipient of Talkers magazine's Freedom of Speech Award, will now be working directly for rival XM 169 The Power starting in June.

It is not clear if he will continue his longtime show on Radio One's WOL-AM in Washington, D.C.

    ----

Radio One Does Web Deal - 5/13 - Lanham-based Radio One's digital unit, Interactive One, signs a five-year, multi-million partnership with AllHipHop.com. The deal aligns the two African-American media organizations to create the largest online ad network targeting the black consumer. The combined traffic will give advertisers access to more than 4 million unique visitors every month and over 500 million page views, reports Radio Online.....

Fake, infected media file attacks half a million victims in a week
    Sun May 11, 2008 1:52PM EDT
    See Comments (8)

what's being called the largest fake media file outbreak in three years, some 500,000 people have fallen prey to a phony music or video track that is actually a spyware-infested Trojan horse.

Usually purporting to be a music track with an MP3 file extension (in this case, an MP3 track from the UK group Girls Aloud), the file is actually an installer that claims to require a special codec and a special media player to play back the file.

Install the codec and what you really get is a computer screen full of pop-ups delivered through a variety of malware programs. You can see what the infection process looks like by checking out the video on this post. The attack is being distributed primarily through peer-to-peer networks.

This is hardly an original attack, but the scale is immense: Those 500,000 attacks occurred in the space of just one week. That's substantial.

The bright spot is that according to McAfee, which provided the data in the BBC report, only about 10 percent of those who downloaded the infected file actually installed it.

The infected file incorporates all manner of potential file names. Though the BBC story includes a half-dozen, the real list of names is exhaustive to the point where it would make little sense including it here. It's likely that that list will continue to grow, too, as the attack continues to develop.

You already know what you need to do now, but I'll say it again: Update your antivirus software, make sure it's running real-time scans, and keep off those peer-to-peer networks.

Can Barack Obama win the general election?

Are we now seeing the Clinton families True Colors with her recent comments?

Will Bob Barr be a factor if he runs for the lib party?

Are people going to vote for colors or issues?

In Mississippi, the democrats took a senate seat away from the Rep. Will there be more Dems to take seats?
  • jeronimo_black · 1 year ago
Yes! Barack Obama CAN win the General.

Hillary's recent comments are expected from a wounded candiate.

Bob Bar will be a small factor.

People vote on color issues everyday. This is no different. White Nationalist and Black Americans have a symbiotic relationship. White people pre-consciously see themselves as superior. Black people (generally) see themselves as inferior.

Don't count Conservatives out. They will stop using the 'R' in front of thier name and go more mainstream in their campaigns. Dems take "real-issues" for granted and play defense too often.

Curious George publisher may sue over T-shirt

The publishing company that owns the Curious George image says it is considering legal action to stop the sale of a T-shirt depicting Barack Obama as the monkey from children's books.

The T-shirts are being peddled by Marietta bar owner Mike Norman at his Mulligan's Bar and Grill in Cobb County. They show a picture of Curious Georgie peeling a banana, with the words "Obama '08" underneath.

Rick Blake, a spokesman for publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, which owns Curious George, said Wednesday that the company didn't authorize the use of the character's image, but hasn't been in touch with anybody selling or manufacturing the shirts.

"We find it offensive and obviously utterly out of keeping with the value Curious George represents," Blake said. "We're monitoring the situation and weighing our options with respect to legal action."

Norman has said he got the T-shirts from someone in Arkansas. He started selling them at his bar -- known for the provocative, ultra-conservative political slogans often posted on signs out front -- in April but said he has no plans to mass market them.

The sales came to light this week when a loose coalition of local groups called a protest of the T-shirts.

About a dozen protestors rallied against the shirts Tuesday afternoon, condemning them as racist and asking Norman to stop selling them.

Norman acknowledged the imagery's Jim Crow roots but said he sees nothing wrong with depicting a prominent African-American as a monkey.

"We're not living in the (19)40's," he said. "Look at him . . . the hairline, the ears -- he looks just like Curious George."

Marietta native Pam Lindley, 47, joined Tuesday's protest after reading about the controversy.

"I don't want people to think this is what Marietta is all about," she added, motioning towards the tavern. "This is what some people think the South is still like. Marietta's come a long way but I guess it's still got a little ways to go."

She said she'd like to see the city ban Norman's provocative musings regularly posted on a sign out front of the bar, which is near Marietta's downtown square. Those who gathered Tuesday say they will continue their campaign against Norman's "hate speech."

But his defenders are just as resolute. Mulligan's is a refuge, they say, in an otherwise hypersensitive world. Smoking isn't only allowed at the bar, it's expected.

"This place is a diamond in the rough," said Gene McKinley, a Woodstock engineer among the patrons Tuesday. "People here are genuine and honest. It's the one place I can go without having to worry if I'm offending someone."

Norman said he fielded calls throughout Tuesday about his T-shirts. An ajc.com story about the controversy was picked up on the Drudge Report. "One guy in New Jersey wanted me to send him 100 shirts," said Norman, 63.

He said he noted physical similarities between the Democratic frontrunner and the cartoon monkey while watching a Curious George movie with his grandchildren.

Someone -- "probably a customer, I don't know" -- from Arkansas sent him the shirts, Norman said.

The Tennessee native said he's providing a public service of sorts, reminding people they have a right to offend.

"This is my marketing tool," he said.
  • DeLoache · 1 year ago
I hope the creator of Curious George wins. That is such a lame sterotype that black people are monkeys. It is really upsetting in 2008.
  • md · 1 year ago
    Stop It.

Hillary Clinton has proved NOTHING other than West VA is populated almost exclusively by inbred, single-digit-IQ redneck hillbillies who would lynch THEMSELVES before voting for a Black man.

I had to point out to my wife back in January something that comedienne Sheryl Underwood pinted out: "Every woman is NOT your friend". As soon as Senator Obama started whupping Clinton's butt, she and her husband ("America's first Black President....REALLY????) started pulling the race card. Now she wants to go back and seat Florida and Michigan delegates, even though she agreed that they would not count !

It's like Donna Brazile said on CNN last night...you have to have respect for the process. Obama is respecting the process, playing by the rules, and is winning. Clinton thinks the process can be manipulated to suit her own ends (entitlement), and is losing, no matter what chicanery she tries to pull.

If they screw Obama out of this nomination, there is no way I'm voting Democrat come November. It really does appear both Democrat and Republican parties are two sides of the same coin.

  • Marsha "RadioLady" · 1 year ago
I engineered ISDN Lines for AT&T and the cost is very expensive. Phew! Are you sure you want to go this route?
  • Buck Wilde · 1 year ago
ISDN has no delay, a more reliable conncetion since it doesn't go through the internet (it's direct point to point, like any other phone call) and these days, the prices are cheaper than cable or DSL - if you tell them you are a RESIDENTIAL customer. With some phone companies, you have to get a supervisor on the phone to get it, as most customer service people have never heard of it for residents.

Not all studios have ip codecs (internet remote equipment), and most manufactures are NOT compatible with each other, while ISDN codecs (like Zephyr) are all compatible with each other.

1st Time Won't Be Last For Internet

The Internet Advertising Bureau says the Web surpassed radio and cable TV for the first time, with a 26% rise in revenues last year. Consumer advertisers remained the largest category, accounting for 55% of last year's Internet revenues.

When I worked in radio sales, I was pushing Internet. Of course my Manager had no vision, blinded by Miller Kaplan. I hope radio wakes up and catches up before it's too late.

I designed a webpage for my station a few years ago when I worked in Promotions and it's not easy. If you're working with a company you are always on their time and sometimes you are waiting for artwork or final approval from a GM or VP. Yeah,I agree that it's taken a long time, but at least you got the Vent to..VENT. They could have NOTHING. Just be patient. But I understand too! Guess we're ready to see what you got Urban!

    I GOT SOMETHING TO SAY!

I'm a young broadcast professional and I work the over night shift. I find it hard at times to network and meet people from other stations. Can u please have a section for people like me who are trying to move up in their career but can't seem to meet the right person to take them there. This business is all about who u know... and I need to meet some folks... ya digg

I sometimes feel the same way. I'm the midday host and I find it very difficult to connect with other females. This is a great outlet, but not ALL personalities use this as a source. You have to get to their Myspace pages (if they have one) and reach out. Get involved in conference calls and travel to conferences. If you're serous about your career, the investment is worth it! Good luck!

Tuesdays Talk with Argee Alen is a great thing in regards to mental health. But the Doctor was being over talked by Moshey. Who is in love with her own voice. Also Why do we have to hear about the bIG BOSS Elroy Smith wanting to hear from the listeners. Why cant it be that WRNB is concerned with what Philly has to say bla bla bla. The Ego's at WRNB are incredible. Get a signal with that ego please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys are absolutely killing me, over the years, urban insight has been a source to find out what's going on in the industry. Not just black radio stations, not just industry news, but a source to keep abreast of what's going on on a daily basis. I'm no webmaster, but by myself. I can update a website go in and tweak a few things, and pretty much be a basic website administrator for my own station. I can't believe you guys with the resources available to you and your associates, that it would take so long to revamp, redo or initiate a new website. If I was to run my radio station and my business this way. Well let's just say, my commitment to get done would not have taken nearly as long. Someone really needs to get off their ass , handle their business, and make it happen! Nuff said...

Since KISS 98.5/WDAI-FM in Myrtle Beach flip from Urban to Urban AC, who will have the streets on lock during Black Bike Weekend? The Rhythmic sister station WSEA-FM flipped as well playing less pop and more hip-hop chaning names from HOT 100 to POWER 100.3 "Hits and Hip-Hop" with Rickey Smiley in da AM. I would hope they'd be the ones mixing all weekend long and out on the strip. Too bad Chucktown's HOT 98.9 is around anymore cause they'd be blazin the entire SC coast. How about WYNN 106 out of Florence and COAST 97.3 in Wilmington....who's taking over Black Bikers Weekend????

Has anyone caught the Guy Black show lately? I see he is actually trying to interact with the listeners for a change. That's not a bad thing. For the longest time he was talking AT them and not TO them. Did they hire a REAL consultant?

Yes, I hear Vinny Brown is consulting KJLH...good for him!!! It didn't take him long to get back in the action.
  • Vickkii B · 1 year ago
Guy Black has always interacted with his audience!! How dare you try to blast my mentor.
From Indianapolis to New Orleans, Guy Black has improved the arbitrons in every market he has impacted!!! Paul Robinson can tell you that!!
  • DeLoache · 1 year ago
That wasn't a "blast" just an observation. I, 2, have followed Guy's career for almost 20 years. He is a pretty good jock, but his morning show was not that great (in the beginning) at KJLH. Before, it sounded as if there was NO show prep. Sounded like they went in and threw a show together. Now, it is sounding like he is actually planning the show with a producer and allowing the listeners to express their opinions....not just give them some tickets and let them do the roll call.

As we all know, KJLH/California radio is different than radio in any other part of the country. Just because a personality can do big numbers in Indianapolis and New Orleans, doesn't mean they'll do well on the west coast.

Did Souljah Boy's mom show up at event

    Staff Writer

    2008-05-21

Souljah Boy or the ring tone king was invited to perform at the WPGC Birthday Bash. WPGC is a CBS radio affiliate based in Washington, D.C. or the DMV. Although Souljah Boy is now over 18, it appears a woman should up at the event acting like his mom. The pictures of Souljah Boy and his crew clearly show the mommie meat giving instructions and , Souljah Boy listening and not saying much.

Other entertainers at the WPGC Birthday Bash were Jay Holiday, WHAT Band, Lloyd, Shorty Lo and many others. Streetroachpics.com was able to capture pictures and video of the event along with a few of the WPGC radio host.

I just want to personally thank Elroy "KILLJOY" Smith for single-handedly taking ALL the umphhh out of 100.3 The Beat. You have Philly legends there and you won't even TRUST them that they know what's right musically for the station. You are taking this "CHR" thing waaaaaaay too far. Welcome to Wired 100.3.

More key players to exit soon as a result of this nonsense...

PS: Colby was NOT fired...he left because he's smarter than dumbing down Philly like Elroy is doing. This format will definitely switch or be sold within 12 months, TRUST!!! Keep hope alive people, thank GOD for Ipods and XM/Sirius radio.

Some jocks may be moving from 99 to 102? Q to may be tweaking more hip hop and DAS to tweak ing more current R&B. Where does that leave Power 99?

    From DCRTV.org...Smooth Jazz is gone.

104.3 Flips To Alt Rock & Elliot - 5/23 - Clear Channel flipped Baltimore's Smooth Jazz 104.3 at noon Friday to alternative rock, with a relay of "Elliot In The Morning" from sister rocker DC101 in morning drive. Now known as "Channel 104.3," the station is aiming at the heavily male demographics of Hearst active rocker WIYY, 98 Rock, and Shamrock classic rocker WZBA, The Bay. The first song on the new 104.3 was Linkin Park's "Given Up." WSMJ will change calls to WCHH on 5/29. New website at channel1043.com. By the way, Clear Channel has recently launched alt rockers in Philadelphia and Hartford. Elliot Segal is also heard on Clear Channel Richmond alt rocker WRXL.....

You old school heads remember Slick Rick right?

    -----------
Hip-hop pioneer `Slick Rick' pardoned by N.Y. gov

New York Gov. David Paterson is granting a full and unconditional pardon to rapper Ricky "Slick Rick" Walters for the attempted murders of two men in 1991.

The pardon is expected to halt efforts to deport Walters to the United Kingdom, the country he left as a child.

The eyepatch-wearing star behind the '80s rap classic "La-Di-Da-Di" served more than five years in prison after the shooting of his cousin and another man. Both survived.

The governor says Walters is now a rap artist and landlord in the Bronx who hasn't had any criminal problems since his release from prison in 1997. He also says Walters has volunteered to counsel youths against violence.

  • Jamz · 1 year ago
I noticed that a few stations that usually do mix weekends on holidays, didn't. 97.9 The Beat in Dallas, Hot 93.3 in Austin are two examples. So I ask, are stations opting out of this tradition?
  • Memorial Weekend Miami · 1 year ago
The crunkest weekend in Miami and WEDR-FM / 99 JAMZ "South Florida's Only Station for Hip-Hop and R&B" should be ashamed of themselves. Why would they wait until Monday to do an all-day mix? Now I see what people were saying about this station 'cause they suck and the wannabe New York accents these jocks give are fraudulent! Miami's pirate stations on 97.7FM and 94.3FM were way crunker and than 99 SUCKS. Its ashame when you have to stream WHTA-FM / HOT 107.9 outta ATL on a laptop in the hotel room to get hyped up. They were jammin the Memorial Weeked Megamix all weekend, nonstop.

Shotouts to BLAZIN 92.3 outta Macon,GA mixing nonstop all weekend too. WLYX-FM / LYX 96 outta Valdosta was jammin too.....DJ Tremaine!!
  • Jamz · 1 year ago
Like I stated below, it seems like some stations have trimmed their holiday mixing down to one day. 97.9 The Beat in Dallas for example, mixed their usual 9pm-2am Friday, then Saturday, they mixed 6pm-2am, Sunday, 6pm-12am, and Monday, 12pm-8pm.

So you replace Colby with Pooch then make Pooch basically beg to keep his gig with this silly "Save My Job" nonsense. I know they're just trying to draw listeners to the website. But why use a stunt like this right after the PD gets shown the door and people are uncertain about whether they'll be next. That's just not good for morale. On another note, that Li'l "Lollipop" song starts with a homophobic, nti-gay reference. Power 99 had the decency to edit it out. I'm still waiting for "The Beat" to do the same. Yes, you have free speech. You have the right to spew whatever hatred you want. But radio stations have an obligation tot he public they serve to not offend people and alienate listeners. I'm just about done with "The Beat".

Black Bike Weekend in Myrtle Beach was cool, NO RADIO STATIONS had presence on the beach though. Coast 97.3 had a mixshow weekend. I found it odd no local jocks, or dj's where in the clubs. P Money from Coast 97. 3 was the only one I heard in the club this weekend. Club Kryptonite had it on lock all weekend I was out there Sunday Night w/Dj Blord (who tore it down), Charlamagne Tha God (was on the mic) Shawty Lo and Rich Boy came thru and performed but it was no presence from any radio station in Myrtle Beach at these eveents I don't understand what they are doing in Myrtle Beach.

I couldnt believe what I heard over the Memorial Day Weekend, V103 had a female mixer. There has never been a female mixer ever in Chicago radio! Never! I've been here over 20 years and I must admit that young lady got down on those turntables, I was shocked! Her mixes were very refreshing! And to my surprise when I visited the website, its their overnight chick, Sundance!!!! Kudos to Derrick Brown!!!!!

    From inside Radio

    Podcast audience is growing "tremendously."

That's according to Edison Media Research, which found the number of Americans who downloaded and listened to an audio podcast grew from 13% to 18% in the past year. Edison Research VP Tom Webster says stations should create as much "podcast-able content" as they can.

I told you before that my Podcast is gettng more listeners than many small market radio stations.

That's "great" that Sundance was on over the weekend. But, i have to correct you. We had a female mixer on WBMX back in the mid 80's in Chicago. Her name was Ms. Mystery and she was a regular guest mixer. We also had Xaviera Gold as a mixer for a while, too. Xaviera would go on to record the classic House song "You Used To Hold Me" with Ralphi Rosario, another mixer on the radio station. I was the host of the show on the radio station at that time.

    @ Armando.
Nice to read from a REAL RADIO VET!
    Question 1,
I've been here a little over 22 years and I've NEVER heard of a woman djing on Chicago radio, let alone V103, when I got here, WBMX was coming to an end.
Since V103 has been up and running I've never heard a woman, I've never heard a woman on WGCI, B96, WJPC or even Power 92, but they are still fairly new, so they don't count....

Why are women so far and in between djing on Chicago radio?

I'm a little sensitive because I have a niece thats a dj, I speak with alot of female djs in different markets and since I've been here they don't exist...

    Please respond....
  • Armando · 1 year ago
I don't have an answer to your question.

But, I can tell you that in the early 90's ('90-91) I approached several popular Chicago female mixers about being featured on the mix show on WGCI. They each told me that they didn't have an interest on being on the radio and wanted to remain exclusive to the underground scene. I was surprised because most of us assume that everybody wants to be on the radio and as I mentioned before we had female mixers Ms. Mystery and Xaviera Gold on WBMX in the mid '80's.

There has been only one female mixer since then that I am personally aware of that made it known that she wanted to mix on-air and that is "Sundance." Email me club1075@aol.com

why is it so damn difficult for female jocks to connect with other female jocks? I mean, damn! Didn't they (meaning the Egypts, the Angie's, the Shamara's or Wendy's) admire someone in the industry one day? Wasn't there someone they looked up to? Didn't someone give them a shot? Is it common to lose your humility when you get to the top shelf? If that's the case, I like down here. But there's always room to learn more and you want to learn from someone who can flow with the same voice and issues that women flow with . It's hard to look up to these chicks man! Not that I've had any personal encounters with them or anything, but if I wanted to shoot an email or a myspace hit, I can't rely on a reply cause they won't. Look, don't lose YOU! Cause person you piss off just may be the one who comes in to take your spot!

Why would someone respond to you? Your whole vibe is negative. I can hear your teeth grinding now. Maybe if you chill out and send out some different energy the results will be better for you. You are bashing folk but at the same time you say you haven't tried to reach out. Who really has the problem? Good luck on the information and mentor that you seek. Not an attack on you, just hoping you will take a look at yourself for a moment.

i agree 100 percent with you. there's only one female i've connected with, and when i tell you i've tried to hit up the major females and got no reply from any of them, i mean any of them. the day i feel that there is nothing else i can learn, i'll quit radio for good, and if that's how all those chicks feel, they need to sit down, because it takes a hungry and humble chick to give it to their asses. well said.
